Tips and variations
For extra crispiness
Make sure the parsnips are well drained after boiling and avoid overcrowding the air fryer. Cooking in a single layer helps them crisp evenly.
Try a different coating
Swap breadcrumbs for panko for a lighter, crunchier texture, or use gluten-free crumbs if needed.
Add flavour
Mix spices like paprika, cumin or a little chilli powder into the breadcrumbs for a different flavour profile.
Keep it simple
Skip the crumb coating altogether and toss the parsnips in a little oil and seasoning for a lighter version.
Make them your own
Cut thicker sticks for a softer centre or thinner for extra crunch, depending on how you like your chips.
Frequently asked questions
Are air fryer chips actually healthy?
Air fryer chips can be a healthier alternative to deep-fried chips, as they use less oil while still achieving a crisp texture. Using vegetables like parsnips also adds fibre and nutrients.
Do parsnips go crispy in the air fryer?
Yes, parsnips crisp up well in the air fryer when cooked at a high temperature and not overcrowded. Boiling them first helps create a soft centre, giving you that contrast similar to chips.
Why do you boil parsnips before air frying?
Boiling parsnips briefly softens the centre, which helps create that contrast between a crisp outside and soft inside once air fried.
How do you make parsnips crispy in the air fryer?
Make sure the parsnips are well drained, evenly coated and not overcrowded in the air fryer. Cooking at a high temperature like 200°C helps achieve a golden, crisp finish.
Are parsnips healthier than potatoes?
Parsnips are slightly higher in fibre and have a naturally sweet flavour. Both have their place, but parsnips are a great way to add variety to meals.
What dips go well with parsnip chips?
Beetroot hummus pairs well with the natural sweetness of parsnips. Garlic yoghurt, aioli or tomato relish are also good options.
